Hailing from Richmond Hill, Ontario, goalkeeper Anna Karpenko is a driven and passionate athlete. She embraces the opportunity to be part of history, helping shape the future of professional women’s soccer in Canada by joining the Montréal Roses in the newly established Northern Super League.
Before joining the Roses, the 5-foot 8 goalie played NCAA Division I soccer with Harvard University for four years, where she excelled both academically and athletically. She then used her final year of eligibility to play at Georgetown University Athletics. This journey has seen her balance elite-level competition with a strong commitment to her studies. Her journey in soccer began at the age of six when her father, recognizing her passion for the sport, enrolled her in her first league. With a family legacy of goalkeepers—both her father and brother played in nets—Anna naturally gravitated toward the role but continued to play as an outfield player until she was 15. It was then that she fully committed to goalkeeping, drawn by the thrill and responsibility of the position.
Karpenko’s career took a pivotal turn at 14 when she received her first call-up to the Canadian youth national team. Since then, she has built an impressive resume, including attending her first Senior Women’s National Team Camp in 2021, winning the Golden Glove at the 2022 CONCACAF U-20 Championship, and being called up for the prestigious SheBelieves Cup in April 2024.
Off the pitch, Anna is equally dedicated to making an impact. She is passionate about education and has spoken at numerous motivational and public-speaking events, inspiring young athletes who seek a similar pathway. She has also contributed to community initiatives, such as Ashley Lawrence’s “Yes She Canada” Christmas Toy Drive.
Superstitious by nature, the 22-year-old follows a strict pre-game routine, always putting on her right sock, shin guard, and cleat first. She also wears the same sports bra for every game. Inspired by legendary goalkeepers like Stéphanie Labbé, Gianluigi Buffon, and Petr Čech, she is a lifelong fan of Lionel Messi and FC Barcelona.
As she continues her playing career, Anna looks forward to seeing how far she can push herself in the sport. Beyond the field, she hopes to stay in the sports industry, ensuring she leaves a lasting impact on the game. With the Montréal Roses, she embraces the challenge of building something new, carving a pathway for future generations of Canadian soccer players.
